Volunteer: Warming Center Volunteers Needed

Tedford Housing’s overnight Warming Center serves as a safe space for our unhoused and unsheltered neighbors (including families and pets) in the Mid Coast region to stay warm during the winter months. This is a low-barrier program, which means the requirements to enter the center are minimal, we emphasize harm reduction principles, and uphold a high standard of safety. Using low-barrier and harm reduction principles allows us to provide a space for our most vulnerable neighbors by recognizing that many of our guests have complex needs and behaviors related to mental illness, substance use, trauma, and systemic injustice.

As a Warming Center host, volunteers will support staff by attending to and serving the evening meal and addressing the needs of the kitchen. They will help set a tone of hospitality and create a welcoming, nourishing space as guests arrive. Volunteers will be based in the kitchen, while staff are in the common spaces assisting guests in getting settled for the evening. The role will require an orientation, provided by Tedford staff.

Host Responsibilities Include:

Representing Tedford Housing with professionalism, dignity, and pride

Setting up and serving dinner and coffee

Keeping kitchen clean and organized, including dishwashing, readying for the next day

Other kitchen related responsibilities

Commitment:

Seasonal (Nov 15-May 1)

At least one 3-hour (approx. 3:45-6:45pm) once-a-week shift for the entirety of the season, preferably the same day

Arrive on time

Qualities:

18 years or older

Able to pass a background check

Empathetic, non-judgmental, patient

Solid understanding of the boundaries, confidentiality, and care needed in a low barrier setting

Ability to de-escalate small conflicts and respond to guests with courtesy and empathy

Tolerance for being around individuals experiencing symptoms of mental illness or substance use disorder including intoxication

Volunteer: Volunteer Screening Team Member (Virtual)

Become a Volunteer Screener for the Red Cross!

In the Volunteer Screener role, you may well be the first real Red Crosser a candidate gets to talk with, and they are eager. You’ll want to seek to understand what brought prospective volunteers to the Red Cross, their areas of interest, and what positions they would find most meaningful. You’ll use your understanding from talking with the volunteer candidates to match expressed interest with the needs of the organization. Therefore, you’ll be connecting new recruits with positions for which they are both interested, well-suited, and needed.  Then you will update their status in our volunteer management system.

You can do this role remotely from your living room in Northern New England or, if you prefer, from an NNE Red Cross office near you. You’ll want to have 4 – 8 hours a week available for this role.

For more information, visit www.redcross.org/volunteer/become-a-volunteer or email VolunteerNNE@redcross.org.

Volunteer: Join our Volunteer Recruitment Force

Whether you prefer to be behind the scenes or front and center at events, I've got an opportunity for you!

Red Cross is 90% staffed by volunteers - they are our workforce! Volunteers serve all up and down our organization and, as a recruiter, I can't do it alone for the whole state of Maine. In my role as the one and only full-time Volunteer Recruitment Specialist for the state, I need volunteers myself! How about you?

The recruitment effort takes many forms.  There's internet research, online postings, virtual events to run, tracking of progress, and even events to attend. Also, almost all of this can be done from your choice location as long as you have connectivity.  The exception would be if you want to go out in your community (like to post flyers) or decide to attend a local event for me.

To learn more, email VolunteerNNE@redcross.org.

Volunteer: Become a Volunteer Teacher with Red Cross!

Perhaps the best protection against emergencies is education. The American Red Cross would much rather meet members of the community before a disaster than after. This is why we offer free programs for different ages and organizations led by Volunteer Instructors, Presenters, and Assistants. This is your opportunity to share your knowledge, to flex your teaching abilities, and to use your communications skills, all while doing your part to save lives and property. All training provided; only sign up for shifts and sessions that fit your schedule!

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUTH
Save lives and prevent injury through The Pillowcase Project. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. Numerous tools have been developed for this program including a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities which have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Many tools for presenters have been developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit. Team Member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer!

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR ADULTS
Be Red Cross Ready teaches people how to prepare for and respond to disasters likely to occur in their community. Participants in Hands Only CPR learn how to check for consciousness, call 911 (or the local emergency number) and give continuous chest compressions. Ready Rating helps businesses, schools, and organizations become better prepared for disasters and other emergencies. All of these are led by volunteer Presenters and Assistants.

Volunteer: Railroad Crews Needed!

The Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum is seeking new volunteers!

Everything at the WW&F happens through the efforts of our team of volunteers. You may not realize it, but the WW&F is staffed entirely by volunteers. Volunteering on the railway is one of the greatest contributions you can make towards the success of the WW&F, and is essential to keeping the Railway running safely and growing.  Over the years, we've been fortunate to attract a skilled, diverse, and enthusiastic volunteer workforce.

As the WW&F has grown, we've identified areas of critical volunteer need and have created a program that enables new volunteers to get involved easily. We are highlighting volunteer positions which we seek to fill and hope that you'll join us.

Currently, WW&F Master Carpenter Eric Schade is seeking volunteers to expand our woodworking crew. The needs are described below:
"The Carpentry department is responsible for maintaining the wooden car fleet of the WW&F. We build new cars, rebuild the old stuff and maintain the operating fleet. We work on the wooden car bodies, and the associated metal work including hand rails, steps, roofs. If you are skilled or interested in work that will help us out let us know.

We need:

Rough carpenters Folks skilled in trim and cabinetry Painters Blacksmiths Tin roof workers Anyone who wants to develop their carpentry skills

We work together and share skills, so if you do not feel accomplished but want to learn, we are your people."

Additionally, we are seeking volunteers in... The track department track laborers to maintain and extend the existing railway. The shop for: skilled machinists for locomotive construction, maintenance and associated work; general laborers for other shop projects. The operating department agents car hosts. The building department framing carpenters other building trades.

If you'd like to volunteer with us please either email us at info@wwfry.org (put 'volunteering' in the subject line) or call us at (207) 882-4193 extension 1. Your information will then be passed along to the manager of the department you are interested in. They will contact you to set up a time to get you acquainted with other members and begin volunteering.

Volunteer: Help Rebuild and Operate a Historic Railroad

Volunteers are a critical part of the WW&F Railway's mission to rebuild Maine history. It is the volunteers that work on our projects, that meet and greet our visitors, and that operate our trains. We have no paid staff.

We encourage new volunteers to come and find a place with us. Because of the variety of things we do, and the potential dangers of working around railroad equipment, we require that new volunteers only do work at the railroad when there are longer-term volunteers around, at least for the first couple of months, so that we can “show you the ropes”.

To volunteer, just show up. All ages, abilities, and interests are welcome. There is something for everyone - and we do our best to match volunteer capabilities and interests with our needs. Of particular note, we always can use additional laborers, skilled metal and wood workers, equipment operators, painters, carpenters and general workers. We also need help to staff our gift shop, prepare meals for the volunteers, clean the campus, act as docents and guides, and manage the day to day operations of one of Mid Coast Maine's premier historic sites.

For those volunteers interested in train crew service, we have an initial waiting period as well as a training program. We ask that new volunteers accumulate at least 150 hours over no less than 6 months, before formal train crew service begins. This helps everyone to get to know everyone else better, and gives time for the new volunteer to decide if the museum is a right fit for them.

Volunteers are always present on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Typically, work begins by 8 am on Saturdays (9am on weekdays) while “closing time” is after 4 PM. (During the late autumn and early winter months, when it gets dark early, we leave early.) Activities are usually rain or shine, but may move indoors during inclement weather.

Our volunteer corps is like a family. Many meet for breakfast before the day begins or for supper after it ends. Others keep in touch with each other throughout the week.

Volunteer: CRC is Looking for Volunteer Drivers!

Boothbay Rides connects residents of the Boothbay region without transportation with volunteers ready to take them to their appointments or errands. Most rides are right in the region, but if you’re a frequent errands-runner to Damariscotta or Brunswick, volunteer with us and you get a buddy to make the drive with! Connect with your community, share stories, and even make a new friend! There’s no minimum time commitment, only pickup the rides you can!

How does it work? Those needing rides contact us with their appointment information, including approximate appointment length and accessibility accommodations, if any. We then send out an email to our pool of volunteer drivers to see who is available. Once a driver is found, we connect them with the rider to establish pickup details. Drivers are expected to use their own vehicles for this volunteer opportunity, but we can even help to cover the cost of gas!

Volunteer Drivers are expected to hold a valid Driver's License and be up to date on their vehicle registration and inspection. Drivers must also have a minimum $300,000 liability auto insurance coverage. CRC will run a Maine State background check, and you are welcome to request a copy of the results.

Volunteer: Storyteller & Interpreter (Docent)

Help tell history's forgotten stories. We invite you to join the crewe!

MFS relies on volunteer docents to welcome visitors and to share the stories of the Popham Colony, the original Virginia, and of Maine's First Ship. We need guides who can work regular shifts and those who can fill in when needed.

This is a fun way to interact with people from all over--from locals to international tourists.
No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and interest.  Training will prepare you to enhance each visitor's experience.  Our visitor center has displays on the history of the Popham Colony and on the building of wooden ships, even a small museum shop. On volunteer workdays shipbuilders and riggers may be present as well.

Flexible schedules are created monthly.  Summer is our busy season with a need for docents lasting into the fall.  We will train new volunteers as necessary.  Volunteers under 18 are welcome when accompanied by an adult.

If interested, contact the MFS office, mfs@mfship.org, and we will share your info with the volunteers who organize the visitor center and docent training and scheduling.

We have several existing school and library programs geared for varying ages; we are also developing new STEAM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs for various grade levels.

Our focus is on the history of animals and humans in a maritime context.  Our exhibits and the extensive research behind them all derive from various STEAM elements (i.e. underwater archaeology, ecology, discovery and civilization made possible by animal/human partnerships).

Volunteer: Critical Home Repair team members needed

Ready to swing a hammer? Habitat volunteer teams weatherize existing homes to decrease energy costs and complete other improvements to make homes more affordable, safer, and healthier for families in need. These changes make it possible for our southern Midcoast neighbors to continue to live where they want to be, at home.

Time commitments vary; some volunteers dedicate one day each week and others spend just a few hours each month with the home repair team. These projects typically take place on a weekday.

You don't have to be a carpenter to participate, though it's best to bring basic building skills. Join the team today!

Volunteer: Volunteer National Wildlife Refuge Ambassador

Job Summary:

Refuge Ambassadors play a crucial role in facilitating meaningful experiences for visitors and the surrounding community. Through their efforts, they promote awareness of important scientific and conservation work that contributes to the protection of wildlife on Maine’s coastal islands. Ambassadors also foster strong emotional connections to those species, which is vital for sustaining the long-term conservation efforts that are needed throughout the Refuge.

Time Commitment:

Volunteer Refuge Ambassadors are typically scheduled for one 3-hour shift per week. Seasonal demands allow for additional shifts from late spring through the summer. Please let us know if you cannot commit to a shift every week (or year-round), as we are occasionally able to work with non-standard schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

Visitor Engagement: Refuge Ambassadors are the face of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge (MCINWR) and often provide the first impression of the Refuge. Successful Ambassadors seek to meet visitors where they are by asking questions and then catering the visitor experience based on the needs and interests of our guests. This can include providing information, answering questions, and facilitating tours of exhibits throughout the facility. Community Engagement: There are opportunities throughout the year for Refuge Ambassadors to engage with the public outside of the Visitor Center. These opportunities allow us to engage with new audiences and increase awareness in the community. Special Events: The Refuge occasionally hosts special events throughout the year and Refuge Ambassadors are encouraged to participate if they are available. Having trained and knowledgeable volunteers available at events significantly increases our ability to provide meaningful and impactful experiences for event guests.  Educational Program Assistance: Assist Refuge Educators in the delivery of classes, lectures, workshops, guided tours, and interpretive activities that advance educational objectives of students and educators and in local K-12 schools as well as adults.  Exhibit Development: There are opportunities for experienced Refuge Ambassadors to assist in the development of exhibits at the Visitor’s Center that support the Public Engagement objectives of the Refuge.  Safety: Ensure the safety of Refuge visitors while touring the Visitor’s Center and throughout all programs and activities. Evaluation: Assist in assessing the effectiveness of Public Engagement exhibits and activities and gather visitors’ feedback to make improvements. Oversight: The Friends of Maine Coastal Islands (FOMCI) is the nonprofit organization that supports the mission of MCINWR and provides coordination and scheduling through FOMCI board members for all volunteers.

Location

The Maine Coastal Islands Nation Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is located at 9 Water Street, Rockland Maine (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/maine-coastal-islands-complex). A second office is located in Milbridge, Maine, but this office typically does not have public programs. The offices and resources for public events created by Friends of Maine Coast Islands (mainecoastislands.org) are located in the Rockland Visitor Center building, and the public spaces are primarily on the ground floor, and an art gallery on the second floor that can be accessed by stairs and elevator. The facility meets universal design (ADA) standards. This is the primary location for all volunteer activities, although there may be opportunities to work with the public in other locations for special events.

Qualifications:

No prior experience in conservation science is required, but a basic familiarity with Maine’s coastal wildlife is helpful. Training about Maine’s seabirds and support are provided to all volunteers to ensure they are knowledgeable and comfortable in working with the public. A willingness to learn and share that learning with others.

Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination

The Friends of Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge does not discriminate in employment and volunteer opportunities on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, membership in an employee organization, retaliation, parental status, military service or other non-merit factor. We encourage applicants of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences to apply.

Volunteer: “One to One” Mentor

Trekkers created the One to One Program for students who could benefit from one-on-one mentoring from caring adults within their community. Unlike our expedition-based programs, One to One provides the necessary infrastructure for you and a student to meet, connect and build a meaningful relationship by spending time together in the community.

Who will be my mentee?

We will match you and a student together based upon gender and shared interests and experiences. These commonalities typically serve as a springboard for you and your student to begin a mentoring relationship.

What is my role as a One to One mentor?

The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as a One to One mentor is to build a relationship with your student. We also ask that you:

Be a positive role model. Consistently attend scheduled meetings. Relay progress, concerns and other relevant information to a Trekkers staff member and parent. How much time is required to be a One to One mentor?

The amount of time required to be a One to One mentor varies. Some students need support during a crisis while others could benefit greatly from a mentoring relationship for months and, possibly, years. Upon submitting an application, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss the best meeting times and frequency for your schedule.

What about mentor training?

In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, you will be required to attend a mentor training before partaking in the program. During this training you’ll learn mentoring basics, have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your areas of strength and weakness. We also have resources for mentors such as common “Dos and Don’ts,” mentoring activities and more. Throughout your course as a One to One mentor, we would like you to update us frequently, voicing any concerns and asking pertinent questions.

What are the benefits of being a One to One mentor?

As a One to One mentor, you will play a unique and vital role in your student’s life. Simply by being a supportive and caring presence, you may feel great personal satisfaction. Together with your student, you’ll have opportunities to explore different resources in your community and experience new things.

What are my next steps?

If you’re interested in becoming a One to One mentor, you can:

Get an application. Download the Volunteer Application OR call the Trekkers office: (207) 594-5095 to request a mailed application. Submit your application. Mail the application to: Trekkers, 325 Old County Road, Rockland, ME 04841 OR you can return it to our office directly. Complete an interview. Trekkers interviews all first-time adult mentor applicants. Upon receiving your application, a Program Manager will contact you to schedule an in-person interview. During the interview you will have the chance to review your application and ask questions. Start changing a life! Before you know it, you’ll be building a relationship with a young person from your own community.

Volunteer: Tutor

Many students in the community could use individual academic support during the school year. Like the One to One program, Trekkers views tutoring as an opportunity to provide students a safety-net of support beyond expeditions. You do not need previous tutoring or teaching experience to volunteer as a tutor.

Do I choose what subject to tutor?

Trekkers always matches each tutor and student together to suit the tutor’s academic strengths and the student’s needs. We want to ensure that whatever subject you tutor, you feel competent and confident in working with a student.

What is my role as a tutor?

We ask that you:

Consistently attend scheduled meetings. Offer your student encouragement and positive feedback. Communicate with Trekkers staff and the student’s parents about progress, concerns and any other relevant information. How much time is required to be a tutor?

The time and frequency of tutoring sessions vary from student to student. As a tutor, you will meet with a student during times that suit both your and the student’s schedules. Some tutors meet with students once or twice a week throughout the year. Others will tutor students until their grade improves – sometimes just a few weeks.

What about tutor training?

Although Trekkers does not offer a tutor training, after completing your application you will meet with a Trekkers staff person to review expectations, ask questions and discuss your availability. Before your first tutoring session, you also will attend a meeting with your student, your student’s parent(s) and a Trekkers staff member to break the ice and decide upon a session schedule. Throughout your time as a tutor, a Trekkers staff member will be available to support you and help you resolve any issues you might encounter.

What are the personal benefits?

While the benefits often vary from tutor to tutor, our tutors derive personal satisfaction from giving back to the community. As a tutor, you’ll build a special relationship with a student and gain experience in teaching and mentoring.

What are my next steps?

If you’re interested in becoming a tutor, you can:

Get an application. Download the Volunteer Application OR call the Trekkers office: (207) 594-5095 to request a mailed application. Submit your application. Mail the application to: Trekkers, 325 Old County Road, Rockland, ME 04841 OR you can return it to our office directly. Complete an interview. Trekkers interviews all first-time tutor applicants. Volunteer: Fundraising & Events Volunteer

Trekkers often achieves our fundraising goals through hosting annual events that require many volunteers. Our current annual fundraising events include Trekkers 5K Run/Walk, July Fired Up event, Auctions and others.

As Trekkers continues to grow, we are seeking to expand our current annual fundraisers and develop more events in the future to support and enrich our core programming.

Fundraising and Event Opportunities

We are seeking volunteers to support every aspect of our fundraising events. “Getting the word out” before an event ensures the greatest community participation and largely contributes to that event’s success. Furthermore, our fundraising events require many helping hands during the events themselves. From pre-event promotion to flipping pancakes and post-event cleanup, there are opportunities for everyone! Specific areas in which we could use your support are:

Sitting on an event committee Marketing/promoting event Designing posters and flyers Submitting event information to newspapers, websites, radio broadcasts, etc. Recruiting volunteers Setup Hands on event support, i.e., flipping pancakes and greeting guests Post-event breakdown and cleanup How much time is required?

Volunteers can contribute as little as an hour during an event to as much as 10 hours a week in the months prior to an event. We would welcome anything than you can give. Before you volunteer, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss your role and the corresponding dates and times of your volunteer position.

Volunteer: Expedition Mentor

Each of Trekkers’ six classes participates in a different educational expedition within the continental United States every year. Our expedition mentors range in age from the late teens to mid-seventies, and while some have extensive experience in youth development or the outdoors, many do not. As Trekkers begins enrolling 7th graders from Rockland, South Thomaston, Thomaston, Cushing, Saint George and Owls Head, our need for expedition mentors will continue to grow.

What is my role as an expedition mentor?

The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as an expedition mentor is to build relationships with students. During the expedition we ask that you:

Be committed to building relationships with ALL participating students. Be a positive role model. Intentionally start conversations with all students. Embrace new experiences, landscapes, outdoor living and travel. Supervise students and facilitate positive team dynamics. Look for teachable moments to share your gifts and experiences with young people. How much time is required to be an expedition mentor?

The length of our overnight expeditions varies from 2 to 15 days. We also offer short day-trips throughout the year.

What about mentor training?

In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, we require all expedition mentors to attend a leadership training before heading out on an expedition. During this training, we will review expectations, safety procedures, mentoring basics and much more.

During the expedition itself, the Program Manager will hold nightly leadership meetings to debrief the successes and challenges of the day and support you in setting specific leadership goals for yourself.

What are the personal benefits?

These are some of the benefits of volunteering for a Trekkers expedition:

Creating connections among youth and other adults in your community Making a difference in a youth’s life Being introduced to new landscapes, cultures, natural resources and more Overcoming challenges that push you outside your comfort zone Being part of a team Giving back

And the relationships you’ll form will be as fun, engaging and powerful as the trip itself!

Volunteer: Teach an Art Class !

Many of our wonderful folks have  life goals around creating Art.  We have had two very successful shows in the community but the pandemic meant  we lost our  ability to provide instruction. Art has been an integral part of MOBIUS, Inc. and with your help we can return it to a vital place again.

Would you like to offer an hour or two to paint alongside and offer advice to our artists? Staff will transport and provide personal supports during this time, even hand over hand if needed.

This could be a one time thing which requires no  background checks,  just your talent and enthusiasm OR you could offer a series and Mobius would provide you with some simple training  and a background check to meet state requirements,

Volunteer: Volunteer Docents at Historic House Museums

We have been hard at work planning safe arrangements that will allow us to have a full season (5/31-10/31) of historic house tours, programming, and operations. Volunteers are key to that success and we’re keen to continue growing our volunteer team. We are accepting applications of interest for volunteer docents at our historic house museums. Our docents love what they do, so giving back feels as much like giving to yourself! Expand your knowledge of history, meet people from around the country and the world, and share your enthusiasm for the people of the Greater Brunswick Maine community. We need docents for both house museums—the Victorian time capsule Skolfield-Whittier House and the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, home of the Civil War hero. (Both houses have multiple stories and require climbing stairs.) Training will begin late spring, with a goal of having new docents in place at the end of May. If you are interested in being docent, please complete an online Volunteer Application. For more information, please call 207.729.6606 or visit www.pejepscothistorical.org.

Volunteer: Do you enjoy supporting our elderly community residents? We need you in the greater Brunswick area!

YOU can make a difference in the life of a senior!  Many of our elderly community members are isolated and lonely.  Most are unable to drive or take public transportation and don't always have family available to help them.  You can make a difference in someone's life by providing companionship, visits, help with errands or grocery shopping, transportation to appointments, or help with correspondence.  Some of our seniors just need someone to talk to, and to tell the stories of their very interesting lives growing up and working in Maine.  If you can spend two to four hours a week with a senior, please contact us.  See what a difference you can make and discover the rewards of volunteering!

Volunteers go through background checks and an orientation focusing on safety protocols. Extra safety protocols are in place during COVID-19 with most volunteers providing phone reassurance and doing errands for clients to minimize in-person contact.

Volunteer: Are you a newcomer to the Bath area? Would you like to get acquainted with an elderly person in your town?

Are you new to the Greater Bath area? Would you like to meet someone who knows the area well and would love to have you visit? We have many elderly people in the area that are still independent and living alone.  They are isolated because they cannot drive anymore or maybe they have family members who are unable to help. Many of their friends have passed away or cannot come to see them as often. They are lonely. We match a volunteer with one elderly person. The two of you can then make plans to just visit, take a walk, go shopping or to a medical appointment, or maybe just share a simple meal. The opportunity to do something they haven't been able to do in a long time is exciting to the senior and very rewarding to our volunteers! The SEARCH Program has seniors waiting for a volunteer in many towns in the Bath area, including all of Sagadahoc County. If you would enjoy bringing some sunshine into the life of a lonely senior, please contact us!

Volunteer: Domestic Violence Helpline Volunteers

Volunteer Advocates are always needed to help cover our 24-hour helpline.  Do your friends tell you that you are a very good listener?  Are you a compassionate and caring person with excellent personal boundaries? These are people in our communities who might be directly affected as a victim, concerned about a family member, or a professional needing information on how to help the person they are working with. Volunteers usually take calls from the comfort of their own home and always have a staff member available to back them up.

Volunteer: School-Based Mentors Needed

We are currently seeking mentors for the 2021-2022 academic year. In the School Program, Bigs meet with their Littles typically for 45-60 minutes the same day and time once per week at a local elementary or middle school. School-Based Mentors are volunteers from area businesses, high school and college students, and community members. This is a minimum of one school-year commitment, and there is no contact with the child outside of the school. During their time together, school-based matches engage in a number of activities that include academic support, playing board or card games, creating a craft or art project, reading a book together, taking part in a group activity or simply talking and listening. Children who participate in the program have been identified by guidance counselors, teachers and parents as in need of extra one-on-one attention due to reasons such as poor academic performance, classroom behavior and low self esteem. The consistent presence of a caring older friend and positive role model can have a significant impact on a child!
