Volunteer: Volunteer National Wildlife Refuge AmbassadorJob Summary: Refuge Ambassadors play a crucial role in facilitating meaningful experiences for visitors and the surrounding community. Through their efforts, they promote awareness of important scientific and conservation work that contributes to the protection of wildlife on Maine’s coastal islands. Ambassadors also foster strong emotional connections to those species, which is vital for sustaining the long-term conservation efforts that are needed throughout the Refuge.
Time Commitment: Volunteer Refuge Ambassadors are typically scheduled for one 3-hour shift per week. Seasonal demands allow for additional shifts from late spring through the summer. Please let us know if you cannot commit to a shift every week (or year-round), as we are occasionally able to work with non-standard schedules.
Key Responsibilities: Visitor Engagement: Refuge Ambassadors are the face of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge (MCINWR) and often provide the first impression of the Refuge. Successful Ambassadors seek to meet visitors where they are by asking questions and then catering the visitor experience based on the needs and interests of our guests. This can include providing information, answering questions, and facilitating tours of exhibits throughout the facility. Community Engagement: There are opportunities throughout the year for Refuge Ambassadors to engage with the public outside of the Visitor Center. These opportunities allow us to engage with new audiences and increase awareness in the community. Special Events: The Refuge occasionally hosts special events throughout the year and Refuge Ambassadors are encouraged to participate if they are available. Having trained and knowledgeable volunteers available at events significantly increases our ability to provide meaningful and impactful experiences for event guests. Educational Program Assistance: Assist Refuge Educators in the delivery of classes, lectures, workshops, guided tours, and interpretive activities that advance educational objectives of students and educators and in local K-12 schools as well as adults. Exhibit Development: There are opportunities for experienced Refuge Ambassadors to assist in the development of exhibits at the Visitor’s Center that support the Public Engagement objectives of the Refuge. Safety: Ensure the safety of Refuge visitors while touring the Visitor’s Center and throughout all programs and activities. Evaluation: Assist in assessing the effectiveness of Public Engagement exhibits and activities and gather visitors’ feedback to make improvements. Oversight: The Friends of Maine Coastal Islands (FOMCI) is the nonprofit organization that supports the mission of MCINWR and provides coordination and scheduling through FOMCI board members for all volunteers.
Location The Maine Coastal Islands Nation Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is located at 9 Water Street, Rockland Maine (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/maine-coastal-islands-complex). A second office is located in Milbridge, Maine, but this office typically does not have public programs. The offices and resources for public events created by Friends of Maine Coast Islands (mainecoastislands.org) are located in the Rockland Visitor Center building, and the public spaces are primarily on the ground floor, and an art gallery on the second floor that can be accessed by stairs and elevator. The facility meets universal design (ADA) standards. This is the primary location for all volunteer activities, although there may be opportunities to work with the public in other locations for special events.
Qualifications: No prior experience in conservation science is required, but a basic familiarity with Maine’s coastal wildlife is helpful. Training about Maine’s seabirds and support are provided to all volunteers to ensure they are knowledgeable and comfortable in working with the public. A willingness to learn and share that learning with others.
Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination The Friends of Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge does not discriminate in employment and volunteer opportunities on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, membership in an employee organization, retaliation, parental status, military service or other non-merit factor. We encourage applicants of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences to apply. Volunteer: “One to One” MentorTrekkers created the One to One Program for students who could benefit from one-on-one mentoring from caring adults within their community. Unlike our expedition-based programs, One to One provides the necessary infrastructure for you and a student to meet, connect and build a meaningful relationship by spending time together in the community. Who will be my mentee? We will match you and a student together based upon gender and shared interests and experiences. These commonalities typically serve as a springboard for you and your student to begin a mentoring relationship. What is my role as a One to One mentor? The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as a One to One mentor is to build a relationship with your student. We also ask that you: Be a positive role model. Consistently attend scheduled meetings. Relay progress, concerns and other relevant information to a Trekkers staff member and parent. How much time is required to be a One to One mentor? The amount of time required to be a One to One mentor varies. Some students need support during a crisis while others could benefit greatly from a mentoring relationship for months and, possibly, years. Upon submitting an application, you will meet with a Trekkers staff member to discuss the best meeting times and frequency for your schedule. What about mentor training? In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, you will be required to attend a mentor training before partaking in the program. During this training you’ll learn mentoring basics, have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your areas of strength and weakness. We also have resources for mentors such as common “Dos and Don’ts,” mentoring activities and more. Throughout your course as a One to One mentor, we would like you to update us frequently, voicing any concerns and asking pertinent questions. What are the benefits of being a One to One mentor? As a One to One mentor, you will play a unique and vital role in your student’s life. Simply by being a supportive and caring presence, you may feel great personal satisfaction. Together with your student, you’ll have opportunities to explore different resources in your community and experience new things. What are my next steps? If you’re interested in becoming a One to One mentor, you can: Get an application. Download the Volunteer Application OR call the Trekkers office: (207) 594-5095 to request a mailed application. Submit your application. Mail the application to: Trekkers, 325 Old County Road, Rockland, ME 04841 OR you can return it to our office directly. Complete an interview. Trekkers interviews all first-time adult mentor applicants. Upon receiving your application, a Program Manager will contact you to schedule an in-person interview. Volunteer: TutorMany students in the community could use individual academic support during the school year. Like the One to One program, Trekkers views tutoring as an opportunity to provide students a safety-net of support beyond expeditions. You do not need previous tutoring or teaching experience to volunteer as a tutor. Do I choose what subject to tutor?Trekkers always matches each tutor and student together to suit the tutor’s academic strengths and the student’s needs. We want to ensure that whatever subject you tutor, you feel competent and confident in working with a student. What is my role as a tutor? We ask that you: Consistently attend scheduled meetings. Offer your student encouragement and positive feedback. Communicate with Trekkers staff and the student’s parents about progress, concerns and any other relevant information. How much time is required to be a tutor? The time and frequency of tutoring sessions vary from student to student. As a tutor, you will meet with a student during times that suit both your and the student’s schedules. Some tutors meet with students once or twice a week throughout the year. Volunteer: Expedition MentorEach of Trekkers’ six classes participates in a different educational expedition within the continental United States every year. Our expedition mentors range in age from the late teens to mid-seventies, and while some have extensive experience in youth development or the outdoors, many do not. As Trekkers begins enrolling 7th graders from Rockland, South Thomaston, Thomaston, Cushing, Saint George and Owls Head, our need for expedition mentors will continue to grow. What is my role as an expedition mentor? The Trekkers model was built upon the principle that programs don’t change lives, relationships do. Following this philosophy, your main priority as an expedition mentor is to build relationships with students. During the expedition we ask that you: Be committed to building relationships with ALL participating students. Be a positive role model. Intentionally start conversations with all students. Embrace new experiences, landscapes, outdoor living and travel. Supervise students and facilitate positive team dynamics. Look for teachable moments to share your gifts and experiences with young people. How much time is required to be an expedition mentor? The length of our overnight expeditions varies from 2 to 15 days. We also offer short day-trips throughout the year. What about mentor training? In addition to the mentor pre-screening process, we require all expedition mentors to attend a leadership training before heading out on an expedition. During this training, we will review expectations, safety procedures, mentoring basics and much more. During the expedition itself, the Program Manager will hold nightly leadership meetings to debrief the successes and challenges of the day and support you in setting specific leadership goals for yourself. What are the personal benefits? These are some of the benefits of volunteering for a Trekkers expedition: Creating connections among youth and other adults in your community Making a difference in a youth’s life Being introduced to new landscapes, cultures, natural resources and more Overcoming challenges that push you outside your comfort zone Being part of a team Giving backAnd the relationships you’ll form will be as fun, engaging and powerful as the trip itself! Volunteer: Are you a newcomer to the Bath area? Would you like to get acquainted with an elderly person in your town? Are you new to the Greater Bath area? Would you like to meet someone who knows the area well and would love to have you visit? We have many elderly people in the area that are still independent and living alone. They are isolated because they cannot drive anymore or maybe they have family members who are unable to help. Many of their friends have passed away or cannot come to see them as often. They are lonely. We match a volunteer with one elderly person. The two of you can then make plans to just visit, take a walk, go shopping or to a medical appointment, or maybe just share a simple meal. The opportunity to do something they haven't been able to do in a long time is exciting to the senior and very rewarding to our volunteers! Volunteer: School-Based Mentors NeededWe are currently seeking mentors for the 2021-2022 academic year. In the School Program, Bigs meet with their Littles typically for 45-60 minutes the same day and time once per week at a local elementary or middle school. School-Based Mentors are volunteers from area businesses, high school and college students, and community members. This is a minimum of one school-year commitment, and there is no contact with the child outside of the school. During their time together, school-based matches engage in a number of activities that include academic support, playing board or card games, creating a craft or art project, reading a book together, taking part in a group activity or simply talking and listening. Children who participate in the program have been identified by guidance counselors, teachers and parents as in need of extra one-on-one attention due to reasons such as poor academic performance, classroom behavior and low self esteem. Volunteer: Community-Based Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Big Couples are neededThere are currently 20 children on the waiting list for the right match with a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple. Some children wait as long as 2 years for a compatible match with a mentor. Please contact us to get involved in starting something great for a child in your community! In the Community Program, Bigs spend 8-12 hours or 2-4 visits per month with their Littles, and commit at least one year to developing a relationship. This program offers flexibility to share a variety of activities with a child during times that fit into your schedule. Bigs in our Community Program are adults, 18 and older, who volunteer to spend some time each month mentoring a child. Our Bigs demonstrate stability, responsibility, and dependability. The role of the Big is to be a friend, not a surrogate parent, entertainer or babysitter. Bigs help their Littles expand their horizons, improve their ability to think and learn, develop new relationships, go to new places, learn about being a good person and valuable member of society, and perhaps most importantly, have fun doing it. Our Littles are children between the ages of 6 through 18 who are facing adversity. Typically, either a parent or school representative makes a request for the child to have a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to serve the children who need us most, including those living in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and coping with parental incarceration. All Littles and their parent/guardian have expressed a desire to have a mentor. Matches are created according to similar interests, compatible personality traits, and the needs of children, volunteers, and their families. Together matches spend time enjoying activities that might include walking, hiking, swimming, biking, snowshoeing, sledding, boating, seeing a movie, creating a craft or art project, preparing a meal, volunteering, and more! Become friends with a child and the opportunities to have fun and make a difference are endless. Volunteer: Comfort Shawl Knitters & CrochetersDo you love to knit or crochet? Our Peaceful Passages program provides special packages to Hospice patients that are designed to offer comfort to patients and their families at the end of life. Each special package includes an angel token, a worry stone with a special message, a candle, and a booklet of poems and prayers with a space for patients to write their thoughts, memories and feelings and a handmade comfort shawl. Each shawl is labeled “This comfort shawl was handmade for you with prayers and thoughts of love.” We have patterns available, though we also invite volunteers to use their own patterns as long as they fit within the general framework of dimensions that we will provide. Our goal is for the shawls to wrap comfortably without a patient having to hold on to them. We very much appreciate the variety of colors, patterns and textures that we receive in our donated shawls.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? If you enjoy handcrafting things, know how to knit or crochet and would like to help someone feel cozy, comforted and thought of at the end of their life, then this is the perfect job for you.
Training Requirement: No required training.

Volunteer: Bereavement Volunteers (for survivors of all ages) & Camp Dragonfly Volunteers (for grieving children and teens and their families)Are you interested in supporting someone through the grieving process? As part of our ongoing services for our Hospice patients, we provide bereavement support to their loved ones during the year after the Hospice patient has died. Some of our volunteers provide supportive phone calls, some provide supportive in-person meetings, some respond to requests to support a family in preparing for an upcoming loss and others help with mailings and events. We also have periodic openings for facilitators for our grief support groups. In addition, many volunteers help make Camp Dragonfly, a day-long program for grieving children and teens, happen each year.

Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides 12 hours of Bereavement training, 3 hours of General Volunteer training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. Volunteer: Veteran-to-Veteran Services for Hospice PatientsAre you a military veteran? Are you interested in serving as good company for our patients who are veterans and/or recognizing their military service? As a proud partner in the We Honor Veterans program, we are always seeking veteran volunteers who would be willing to volunteer with other veteran patients. This might mean connecting with terminally ill veteran patients by phone or visiting with them where they live. Our veteran Hospice patients also have the opportunity to have their military service recognized through a special pinning ceremony offered by our veteran volunteers. These experiences are frequently very meaningful to the patient, his or her family and our veteran volunteers.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? As with our other Hospice volunteering opportunities, great listening skills are essential for this role. Our Veteran-to-Veteran program also requires volunteers to be sensitive to the wide variety of military experiences that our veteran patients have had, a range of perspectives on that service and very individualized needs in terms of how that service impacts patients and their families at the end of life. Our patients are also looking for good company, so you’re likely a good fit for this if you enjoy getting to know people and learning about their life. In addition to discussing military history and its impact, our patients might request someone who would be willing to read to them, engage in cards or games, chat with them (maybe even in French), help with cards or letters or sometimes just sit together. Visits may also provide respite time so that family members who are the patients’ primary caregivers are able to get well-deserved breaks. If you’re looking for a compassionate way to honor and respect fellow veterans at the end of their lives, we invite you to consider joining us.
Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides 20 hours of comprehensive Hospice training (which includes a component of veteran-specific training), a background check and TB testing at no cost to you. The usual training structure for the 20 hours of Hospice training is two training sessions per week for several weeks, with each session lasting three to four hours.
Ongoing Commitment At least two hours per week for one year
Dates/Times Available: Most needs are for weekday visits, though veteran pinning ceremonies are sometimes requested on weekends when a patient would like more loved ones to be present.
Next Steps: Respond here and we will schedule a time to talk with you by phone to review options and share upcoming training times. We also invite you to visit our website at www.ahch.org for more information on our organization.
Special Note: We ask that anyone who has experienced the recent loss of a loved one wait 1 year before doing Hospice volunteering.
Thank you for considering volunteering with Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice Organization: Androscoggin Home Healthcare + Hospice-Mid Coast Maine Are you a military veteran?

Volunteer: Office Volunteers - LewistonAre you a person who enjoys: Bringing order to things? Connecting with patients by phone? Utilizing your computer skills? Helping to get mailings out the door? If so, you will enjoy volunteering in our offices. There are a wide range of projects that you can support, ranging from filing, preparing packets for patients, organizing materials for volunteer trainings, entering data into a variety of spreadsheets, making phone calls to check on patient satisfaction or patient needs, helping to get mailings out or any number of other projects. You’ll be matched with specific projects based on your interests, experience and schedule.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? The answer really varies on this one. If you enjoy connecting with people on the phone, you’d likely be a good fit for some of our phone check-ins. Some of our happiest office project volunteers are people who love to take ownership of getting a project completed, a mailing sent out or packets ready for whoever needs them next. Other office volunteers really enjoy the chance to work with other volunteers and work as a team on whatever needs to be done that week. If you enjoy word processing and/or spreadsheet work, we often have both short-term and ongoing work using those skills. And if you have an eye for color and design, we sometimes have special projects that could benefit from those skills, too. Technical skills can be a plus as well. Again, we really work to match volunteers with the office projects that will be the best fit for them.
Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides six hours of training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you.
Ongoing Commitment: At least two hours per week for one year
Dates/Times Available: Most needs are Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Next Steps: Respond here and we will schedule a time to talk with you by phone to review options and share upcoming training times. We also invite you to visit our website at www.ahch.org for more information on our organization.

Volunteer: Driving for Patient Appointments & ErrandsDo you love to drive? Our homebound patients sometimes need someone to give them a ride to important medical appointments. They also sometimes need help picking up medications or groceries. We will match you with patients in your area and also offer reimbursement for much of your mileage. Despite our fantastic network of volunteers, we often have transportation requests that we are unable to fill.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? If you love to drive, you’re probably already a good fit. You can also appreciate how frustrating it can be for our patients when they are unable to take care of essential needs on their own. Patience is also another essential quality if you’re interested in volunteering as a driver. There are times when things don’t go exactly as planned, whether that might be a patient who gets confused or an appointment that takes longer than expected. We’ll always be here to back you up, but it’s helpful if you’re someone who is flexible. In exchange, you will get to meet some great people, make a real difference in someone’s ability to meet some key needs and get to spend some time behind the wheel.
Training Requirement: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice provides six hours of training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to you.

Special Note: Our volunteer drivers use their own vehicles, so in addition to a valid driver’s license and clean driving record, you need to have a vehicle in good working condition and up to date auto insurance.

Volunteer: Companionship for Hospice PatientsAre you interested in serving as good company for terminally ill patients? We are always looking for compassionate individuals who are interested in supporting terminally ill patients in their homes, in nursing facilities or at our Hospice House. These volunteers provide vital companionship to patients and crucial respite breaks for caregivers. Some volunteers also assist with critical needs like grocery shopping, medication pick-up or transportation.
How would I know if I’m a good fit for this? The most essential skill for this role is great listening skills. If you are someone who enjoys getting to know people, this is likely a good fit for you. In addition to trying to find opportunities to volunteer close to your home, we also match patients and volunteers based on interests and requests. This could include things like a shared interest in cribbage, the ability to speak (and sometimes sing) in French, openness to sitting outside in the sunshine, helping a patient record her/his life story for family members, reading aloud, helping write cards or letters, playing cards, scrapbooking or sometimes just sitting with someone. Patients sometimes have special outing wishes-—maybe a chance to have their favorite ice cream one last time. Many of our patients enjoy reflecting on their life experiences and are very appreciative of someone who is interested in listening.
