Who We Are

Independence Association assists adults and children with disabilities in obtaining full and inclusive lives in their chosen communities. We were founded in the 1960s by local parents who wanted more for their children than the institutional care available at the time, and have grown from a tiny educational center in a church to a large organization serving some 330 individuals. Perhaps because of our grassroots founding, we have become over time part of one of the most visibly inclusive communities in the US for people with disabilities.

What We Do

Independence Association supports about 330 clients with a full range of services: adult and children's case management; housing options (group homes, shared living, independent living and in-home supportive services); community-based services including employment and volunteer projects throughout the Mid Coast; center-based programming; and two Spindleworks Art Centers where professional artists mentor clients in creative skills.
