Midcoast Literacy

Midcoast Literacy is a non-profit organization serving Sagadahoc, Lincoln, and northern Cumberland Counties whose mission is improving lives through literacy. Approximately 15% of Maine's population has below basic literacy skills. Our vision is a community where everyone, from our youngest children to adults, is supported to learn to read, write, and speak English successfully, regardless of age, initial skill level, or background. We understand that the pursuit of literacy is a lifelong journey and offer a wide range of programs to help people of all ages develop their literacy skills, so they may become competent, healthy, caring individuals who succeed through all stages of life. Our programs provide free, individualized tutoring for adults and school-age children; workplace literacy group classes for English language learners employed at local businesses; family literacy sessions for preschool and Pre-K families; and free children’s books for low-income families. To support our mission, we have a small paid staff and rely on the dedication, skills, and generosity of a large number of volunteers.
Midcoast Literacy provides free literacy-building programs for people in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, and northern Cumberland Counties.
Our Adult Literacy Services include one-on-one Adult Basic Literacy tutoring for individuals working to improve their reading and writing; English Language tutoring for non-native English speakers learning to speak, read, and write in English; and Workplace Literacy small group classes for non-native English speaking employees at local businesses.
Our Family Literacy Services include Read With Me early literacy sessions for children and their families in Head Start and Early Head Start; one-on-one Read Together tutoring for children ages 6-14 who are struggling to read at grade level; and Summer Books for low-income kids in local summer school, summer meals, and other community summer programs.
We work with approximately 150 volunteer tutors from the community each year to deliver our services to those in need.
