Description

Have you ever wondered what it takes to keep a railway operating? Or perhaps you have lifelong interest in railroads?

Come down & join us as a volunteer!

Learn essential railroad maintenance skills and become part of a team that has, and continues to rebuild Maine history.

Volunteers are a critical part of our mission to rebuild Maine history. It is the volunteers that work on our projects, that meet and greet our visitors, and that operate our trains. We have no paid staff.

Join the WW&F crew for a Unique Volunteer Work Experience • Includes an Evening Dinner Train.

Your day out on the railway will begin at 8:30am with a safety briefing. Following the briefing, work parties will assemble to learn the basic jobs. The remainder of the day until 3:00 will be spent engaged in track maintenance with a break for lunch. After work a dinner train for volunteers will depart at 4PM and return to Sheepscot at 6PM.

  • Volunteer shifts begin promptly at 8:30AM at 97 Cross Road, Alna, Maine
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to ensure trains can leave and work can begin on time
  • Wear heeled, fully enclosed above the ankle boots (safety boots are preferable)
  • Wear full legged pants (no shorts, etc.)
  • While an evening meal is provided, please bring your own bagged lunch to be eaten at the worksite during the lunch break.
  • Work will conclude at 3PM.
  • Younger volunteers are welcome under appropriate adult supervision.
  • A dinner train for all participants will leave Sheepscot at 4PM returning at 6PM. This is a thank you for your labor throughout the day and as such, is free of charge.

Volunteers Needed As:

  • Preppers: These crew members prepare for the new tie by pulling spikes, jacking up rails, removing the old tie, and pulling the jacks.
  • Tie Installers: These crew members insert new ties & assist the tamper operator in tamping (compacting) the stone around the tie.
  • Spikers: These crew members spike the new tie in place using spike mauls and tie nippers.
