Who We Are
For three decades, the American Lighthouse Foundation’s mission has impacted hundreds of thousands of people through our historic preservation projects, public access programs and fun-learning initiatives. These achievements have helped our lighthouses go from an uncertain future to beautifully restored historic sites that the public can visit, explore inside and learn about their fascinating human-interest stories. For some of our visitors, it is their first time to see a lighthouse in person and oh, how they enjoy climbing to the top for a birds-eye view and experiencing a joy that promises to last a lifetime! The mission of the American Lighthouse Foundation is to save and preserve our nation’s historic light stations and their rich heritage. This will be accomplished through the restoration, promotion and adaptive re-use of America’s historic light stations, as well as educational initiatives that foster the sustainable preservation of lighthouses and perpetuate the legacy of the men and women who have tended them.
What We Do
The American Lighthouse Foundation offers diverse opportunities for the public to explore and learn about our historic lighthouses and their rich history. Volunteers are a vital part of our success with public access programs at two lighthouses here in the Midcoast, Owls Head Lighthouse and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. Visitors to our lighthouses have the opportunity to climb to the top of the lighthouse while learning about its unique history.
